چکیده

In 1937 Dr. A. Q. Wells discovered an acid-fast bacillus giving rise to a disease in voles which he described as tuberculosis. Though it was regarded by some as a form of leprosy, further investigations showed that his description of the disease was essentially correct. The first part of the present report written by Dr. Wells himself, deals with the morphology, culture and pathogenicity of the vole bacillus and results of immunization experiments with it. The bacillus can be grown in artificial culture and is capable of producing characteristic tuberculous reactions when injected into animals; it is antigenically indistinguishable from the human and bovine types of tubercle bacillus, and it forms a tuberculin in liquid media which is very closely allied to, if not identical with, mammalian ' old tuberculin'. It is therefore fair to conclude that the organism is a third type of mammalian tubercle bacillus, and the term ' murine type of

A Paralytic Disease of Guinea Pigs Due to the Tubercle Bacillus

The experimental data collected during this study of a transmissible type of paralysis developing in tuberculous guinea pigs indicate the condition to be a true tuberculous meningitis. We have been able to rule out the possibility that it is due to a non-tuberculous infection of the central nervous system caused by Roemer's virus, or by an atypical herpes virus, or by some bacterium other than ...

Newer diagnostic techniques for tuberculosis.

Diagnosis of tuberculosis is mainly based on clinical features, histopathology, demonstration of acid fast bacilli (AFB) and isolation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from the clinical specimens. These techniques have limitations of speed, sensitivity and specificity. During the last two decades several rapid techniques for detection of early growth (5-14 days as compared to 2-8 wk with conventio...

Comparison of techniques for measuring the isoniazid resistance of tubercle bacilli.

As with streptomycin and P.A.S., the introduction of isoniazid for the treatment of tuberculosis has raised the problem of the development of resistance to the drug in strains of tubercle bacilli recovered from treated patients. In the Medical Research Council (1952) trials 71% of cultures from patients who had received three months' treatment with isoniazid alone were found to be resistant. Al...

The Influence of Certain Organic Substances on the Growth of the Tubercle Bacillus

The power of a large number of aniline dyes to restrain the growth of Bacillus tuberculosis and Bacillus typhosus has been determined. Many substances have been found with especial restraining power for the tubercle bacillus under the conditions of the test. This capacity to restrain growth in the case of the tubercle bacillus apparently bears no simple relation to true disinfectant action. Opi...

The Chemistry of the Lipids of the Tubercle Bacillus *

The present review will be devoted to an account of the chemical investigations that have been carried out in the Sterling Chemistry Laboratory on the lipids of the tubercle bacillus and certain other acid-fast bacteria. Detailed reports covering the results that have been obtained have been published from time to time, and a partial list of these reports will be found at the end of this paper....
